Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds snubbed Met Gala for Wrexham bus parade

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney ‘serious’ about Gareth Bale playing at Wrexham

If Wrexham fans were ever in doubt about Ryan Reynolds’ dedication to the club, then his decision to ditch fashion’s biggest night of the year to celebrate with the team on an open top bus tour should quash those concerns.

The first Monday of May is an important date for celebrities and fashionistas alike. It’s the night that the Met Gala, hosted by Vogue Editor in Chief Anna Wintour, 73, takes place, with stars being desperate for invites.

This year’s theme was Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty, in honour of the legendary fashion designer who died in 2019.

But for Hollywood power couple Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively this year, Wrexham comes first as they head to Cymru to celebrate the team’s promotion to the English Football League.

Blake, who recently gave birth to the couple’s fourth child, took to Instagram just hours before the event to confirm that she wouldn’t be attending, by posting a picture from home with the caption, “First Monday of May”.

She also added an animation to the candid shot insinuating she’d be busy expressing milk rather than dressing up and rubbing shoulders with the Hollywood elite.

Ryan, 46, bought Wrexham football club in 2020 with ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ actor Rob McElhenney, 46, for $2.76million.

Documenting the journey with the Disney+ documentary series “Welcome to Wrexham”, it didn’t always look as though it was a sound financial decision.

However, a 3-1 win against Boreham Wood saw the Welsh team promoted to the English Football league, which it’s not been a part of for 15 years.

Talking to Access Hollywood, Ryan and Blake confirmed they wouldn’t be heading to this year’s Met Gala, with The Proposal actor saying: “We’ll be in the UK. We have Wrexham business to deal with.”

He went on to say: “So many things had to go right that involved dumb luck in addition to obviously putting in a strong foundation.

“A lot of things went right. Things we never expected.

“Like another team being incredible this entire season, which created such a tension in not just Wrexham but globally for everyone watching Wrexham. It’s been a pretty remarkable journey.”

But whilst Ryan and Blake head to the Wrexham streets to cheer on their team, Twitter has gone into meltdown, with fans tweeting, “There is no Met Gala without Blake Lively”.

The Gossip Girl actress has, however, shown her support for her husband’s football team by attending matches and even bringing her four children to Wales to watch Wrexham go up against York City.

Although Ryan has always claimed Blake has been supportive, he did tell Jimmy Kimmel in an interview: “I remember seeing Blake, saying, ‘I have bad news and I have really bad news. I slipped into someone’s DMs again. The really bad news is that I might have bought half of a fifth tier national football league in Wales’.”

Now, with Wrexham winning trophies, fans can look forward to seeing Blake rock the red and white Wrexham colours and bringing a bit of extra glamour to The Racecourse Ground.
