Coronation Street star Ali Mardell has recalled how she was left speechless when now fiancé Joe Parker got down on one knee. Joe, 27, had hoped to pop the question during a romantic trip to Paris but his plans were halted by the pandemic.

It was a complete surprise, I was at the kitchen sink like ‘Is this happening?’

Ali, also 27, became engaged to Joe in April but the couple are still on cloud nine.

While the nation may know Ali as Corrie’s ditzy barmaid, Emma Brooker, the pair admit that the “buzz” of becoming engaged has not yet worn off.

Despite their happy news, their big day will come with great sorrow as Ali’s father died from cardiomyopathy in 2016.

While her dad may not be able to walk his daughter down the aisle, she admits that he would have gotten on well with Joe.

In a new interview, she said of the proposal: “It was a complete surprise, I was at the kitchen sink like, ‘Is this happening?'”

Recalling the day of the engagement, Ali added: “The end of lockdown was approaching, but we’ve actually been enjoying our indoor date nights, so we thought we’d have a big Italian feast.

“Joe put on some Italian music and made a spag bol, he spent all Friday night making it ready for Saturday,” before Joe joked about almost burning their romantic meal.

Speaking about the moment he got down on one knee, he added: “It was a spur-of-the-moment thing, I was trying to think of ways I could do it but nothing was open.”

“The original plan was to propose in Paris, which we’d booked for Ali’s birthday, but that got cancelled so I went for the kitchen instead,” he explained.

Speaking to this week’s OK! Magazine, Ali went on to explain: “We’d finished dinner and were dancing to some Italian music, we started talking about how we’ve been really lucky in lockdown to have had such a nice time together when Joe disappeared.

“I thought he was going to the toilet, so I started doing the washing-up, when he came back he told me to leave the pans and asked me to dance again – next thing I know he was down on one knee!”

Joe admits that he had already known the type of ring his fiancée had wanted and headed to London after finding the “perfect stone”.

The ITV actress often shares an insight into her blissful relationship with Joe with her 106,000 Instagram followers.

Announcing her news in April, she shared three images of the happy couple showcasing her stunning ring.

Alongside her post, she wrote: “Love locked down!! 1000000 times yes! You make me so happy, my face hurts! Love you ridiculously. Future Mrs Parker!”

The upload that has since been liked over 20,000 times was instantly flooded by celebratory messages from her co-stars and thousands of fans.

Kate Ford, known for playing Tracey Barlow, penned: “Brilliant!! Xxx.”

While Danielle Brown, the sister of Spice Girls’ Mel B, added: “Omg Congratulations. So happy for you both.”(sic)

“Yaaaaay! This is wonderful news! Congratulations guys,”(sic) exclaimed Shona Ramsey actress Julia Goulding.

While Mel B’s mum Andrea is a family friend of Ali’s, she admits that Melanie may not be in attendance.

“Andrea will definitely be at the wedding. I think she’ll be coming on the hen do as well. I don’t think Melanie will come, though, I went to her wedding, but I’m not sure she’ll come to mine,” she revealed.
