Davina McCall, 53, has opened up about the aftermath of her split from ex-husband Matthew Robertson, who used to host Pet Rescue. The pair began working together in 2000, just as Davina’s career with Big Brother began, and they married in June the same year at a lavish ceremony at Eastnor Castle in Herefordshire.

But in 2017 they decided to go their separate ways, however they were still living together.

In a new interview, Davina admitted it was an “awkward” situation as she struggled through what she describes as “a real transitional phase” of her life.

“We’d still been living in our house together, which was awkward,” she said.

“I hadn’t moved on and I was in this weird no-man’s land.”

The presenter eventually moved out and rented a place, which was the beginning of her “new phase”.

“I thought, ‘OK, we can look forward now.’ It was transformative.

“Since then, I’ve really tried to simplify my life and scale it down, which has been a very positive thing.”

Back in 2017, Davina posted on Instagram some cryptic messages before confirming her split with Matthew, admitting she had “made many mistakes” in her life but their children will always be their “number one priority”.

She shared a motivational quote with her followers on which read: “Every morning we get a chance to be different. A chance to change. A chance to be better.

“Your past is your past. Leave it there. Get on with the future part.”

Davina added: “I really know about this one. I have made so many mistakes in my life. But there is always a new day.”

Last year, the Masked Dancer judge described her marriage breakdown as “absolute emotional turmoil”.

Speaking to the Mail on Sunday’s You, she explained: “Going through a divorce is a traumatic experience and it is something that needs to be navigated as carefully as possible.

“Two years on, we have both grown as people and we can now co-parent happily and acknowledge that it was the right thing for us to go through even though it involved absolute emotional turmoil.”

Back to present day, Davina continued to tell Good Housekeeping her advice about going through a divorce.

“My advice to friends of anyone going through it is: even if someone looks fine, support them.

“No one gets divorced without really thinking about it – this idea that people rush into it, that just doesn’t happen.”

She added: “It’s an enormous deal and it really is hard, so be there.”
