It’s been three months since the death of Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek. The show has moved on, with its greatest player Ken Jennings helming the guest host position until a permanent host is named.
Recently, Trebek’s eldest daughter Nicky, his child from his first marriage to Elaine Trebek Kares, shared joyfully from her heart as she remembered her father’s unique sense of humor and personality.
Trebek left an enormous gap in 2020
Trebek’s death in November saddened his millions of fans. In March 2019, the Canadian-born television personality told the world of his diagnosis with stage IV pancreatic cancer.
The Television Academy Foundation in 2007 asked Trebek his thoughts on the legacy of the program he practically transformed into a brand, Jeopardy!
“A respect for knowledge,” he stated. “There’s nothing wrong with being bright. There’s nothing wrong with comporting yourself in a decent manner, with respect for your fellow individuals. We don’t take cheap shots at people, in our clues or on the program. I think that says a great deal about us.”
His family recently donated Trebek’s ‘Jeopardy!’ wardrobe
Recently, Alex Trebek’s family announced that items from the host’s wardrobe will be donated to The Doe Fund. The organization, the game show’s tweet said, “provides paid work, housing, and training to underserved Americans with histories of addiction, homelessness, and incarceration.”
The quiz show tweeted a breakdown of exactly what his family contributed to the organization: “The donation includes: 14 suits, 58 dress shirts, 300 neckties, 25 polo shirts, 14 sweaters, 9 sports coats, 9 pairs of dress shoes, 15 belts, 2 parkas, and 3 pairs of dress slacks.”
His son Matthew explained his family’s decision to share his father’s elegant and distinctive wardrobe, saying “[The Doe Fund’s] flagship mission, “Ready Willing and Able” was something I knew my dad would be totally on board with,” he said. “My hope is that the confidence someone might feel in wearing one of my dad’s suits and ties will help them land a job, and more importantly, will help them realize that they are not alone.”
How Trebek’s daughter Nicky keeps his memory alive
Trebek in his 2020 memoir, The Answer Is…, wrote about Nicky with great affection.
“She was around 6 when Elaine and I got together, and cute as all get out,” he recalled. “The two of them moved to Los Angeles not long after I got settled in, and Elaine and I were married in 1974.”
He recalled how his then-wife invited his mother to come live with them and the four of them created a tight-knit family.
“We bought a house on Mulholland Drive, and Elaine invited my mother, who was living in Florida, to come to California and live with us and help raise Nicky,” he continued. “It was Elaine’s idea, not mine, to have Mom come. And it worked out great.”
Even after the couple divorced in 1981, Trebek’s mother remained living with Nicky and her mother, while he bought a home directly across the street from them and stayed close.
Nicky last week posted a photo on Instagram of her beloved late father striking a pose. In her post, she expressed her wish to remember him with joy now rather than tears.
She wrote, “#february8 it’s been 3 months and rather than post something sad I #choosejoy this always makes me laugh thinking about how many times he did that trying to get it right #threemonths #missingyoualways #dad #milestonesandmemories”
