Dame Judi Dench has macular degeneration, a common age-related condition that affects the middle part of a person’s vision. The deterioration in her sight has caused the 86-year-old actress a few problems on set, most notably recognising her colleagues and learning her lines.

During the pandemic, Judi headed back to work to film new release Belfast, a black and white coming of age movie set in 1960s Northern Ireland.

At the European premiere for the film, which took place during the London Film Festival earlier this month, Judi went into more detail about the problems the condition causes her at work.

“I kept going up to the wrong person, having a conversation, and they’d say: ‘I’m not who you think I am,'” she told the Daily Mail.

She previously revealed that it also forced her to learn her lines in a different way.

During an interview with Radio Times, the award-winning actress said that she now relies on friends to help her practice her script before going on set.

She learns through repetition.

“I’ve had to find another way of learning lines and things, which is having great friends of mine repeat them to me over and over and over again,” she told the publication.

The mum-of-one also touched on some of the other things that have been affected by her poor sight.

“I can’t read the paper now, I can’t do the crossword, I can’t read a book.”

Not surprisingly, she also had to quit driving several years ago.

As the movie star approaches her 87th birthday, she is showing no signs of slowing down and yesterday attended an event to support her partner David Mills.

The 77-year-old, who founded Surrey’s British Wildlife Centre zoo, received a fellowship at the University of Winchester to recognise his work in conservation.

David and Judi, who received an honour doctorate in 2019, were seen in traditional garb for the occasion.

They were joined by TV presenter and gardener Alan Titchmarsh, 72, who is a chancellor at the university.

The couple have been dating for 11 years after first meeting in 2010.

The conservationist recently spoke about their relationship and marriage plans during a chat to Richard Eden for the Daily Mail.

He said that after a lengthy conversation doing lockdown, the pair weighed up the pros and cons of marriage and decided that they didn’t want to tie the knot.

“We are happy to stay as we are,” David said.

Judi was previously married to her A Fine Romance co-star Michael Williams.

They were married for 30 years until the actor’s death from lung cancer in 2001.
