Freedom of social media speech has its limits and Kanye West recently pushed those limits too far. On March 16, Instagram temporarily suspended Kanye’s account, putting a 24-hour freeze on his ability to post (to his grid or his Story), comment on other people’s posts, or send DMs on the platform.
A spokesperson for Meta (née Facebook) officially confirmed the suspension to E! News. The rep didn’t specify which post (or posts) led to the suspension, but did explain that the rapper’s account was flagged for violating the company’s policies regarding hate speech, bullying, and harassment.
FWIW, Kim Kardashian (who, along with her current boyfriend, Pete Davidson) has been a frequent target of Kanye’s IG wrath amid their divorce, reportedly thinks the company’s decision was justified.
“Kim found the suspension to be fair, but her reaction wasn’t very dramatic. She didn’t make a big deal out of it and joked that she needed a break for a day. All of Kanye’s posts have been exhausting for her though,” a source told People of her reaction to the news. “It’s very impressive how calm and collected she is able to stay. She is very happy with Pete. Her kids are doing great. She is trying her best to stay positive and focus on all the amazing things in her life.”
Kanye’s IG suspension came after he posted a racial slur aimed Trevor Noah after the Daily Show host called out the rapper’s toxic online behavior and the seriousness of his “escalating” harassment of Kim, saying, “It touches on something that is more sensitive and more serious than people would like to admit.
