The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are continuing to celebrate Women’s History Month.
Per People, Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan surprised a teenage student, who was logging on to a virtual mentoring session and was shocked to see the Duke and Duchess of Sussex on her screen. The royal couple were the student’s personal mentors and tutors for the day, following their promise to “unleash a groundswell of real acts of compassion” in honor of WHM. The tutoring session was set up in partnership with L.A. Works and the “I Have a Dream” Foundation, which helps ensure children have the opportunity to pursue higher education.
“She had this moment of surprise and excitement when she got on the phone with the duke and duchess,” L.A. Works Executive Director Deborah Brutchey told People. “She knew of them, she knew a lot—she had been following Meghan’s story quite a bit, so she was very excited that she had the opportunity to speak with them.”
Aside from helping the student with her classwork, the duke and duchess asked her about how she handles challenges at home and school, and how she stays true to her values. The couple also discussed their own personal experiences.
Brutchey added that the student was visibly moved by Harry and Meghan’s “compassion, humility and wisdom” shown throughout their conversation together.
“It was really significant for her because they saw her potential in a few short minutes, which actually really undid some damage that had been previously caused by a former teacher’s doubt,” said Brutchey. “It was just amazing how they were able to connect and how their compassion, in just a short conversation, really made an impact and is going to forever inspire her.”
