The Trailer For Michelle Obama’s New Show Is Turning Heads

Former First Lady Michelle Obama is set to appear in the new Netflix show, Waffles + Mochi, a family-friendly exploration and celebration of foods from around the world that will feature celebrity chefs and puppets alike. Obama will portray a grocery store owner who aids the title characters — a.k.a. her employees and puppet pals, Waffles and Mochi — to learn as they aim to fulfill their dream of becoming world class chefs, according to Harper’s Bazaar. For those wondering, Jezebel respectively described these characters as “a waffle covered yeti” and a tiny, smiling “pink mochi.” The adorable series is set to air on the streaming site on March 16, 2021.

When the show was announced in early February, Obama took to Twitter to share her excitement, saying, “I’m beyond thrilled to share that on March 16, I’ll be launching a new show on @Netflix called Waffles + Mochi! I’m excited for families and children everywhere to join us on our adventures as we discover, cook, and eat delicious food from all over the world.” Echoing her previous work with the Let’s Move! initiative during presidential husband Barack Obama’s time in the White House, Michelle added, “I’m also excited to work with @PHAnews to help kids build healthy habits and help families in need cook with fresh ingredients together at home.”

With the trailer for the show now released, potential viewers have gotten a glimpse into what the educational series will look like — and celebrities abound!

The cast of Michelle Obama's new Netflix show is star-studded

In the Waffles + Mochi trailer that was just released, along with former FLOTUS Michelle Obama, viewers can see multiple big-deal chefs onscreen, like Three-Michelin-star chef Massimo Bottura, Salt Fat Acid Heat star Samin Nosrat, and World Central Kitchen founder José Andrés. The trio all make appearances to help the fictional characters along their adventurous culinary journey (via Harper’s Bazaar).

As an extra bonus to get viewers excited, several non-chef celebrities also make cameos on this kid’s cooking show, with the trailer featuring many fan-favorite faces, such as  rapper Common, comedic actor Jack Black, Queer Eye star Tan France, The Hangover‘s Zach Galifianakis, Parks and Recreation actor Rashida Jones, AP Bio‘s Lyric Lewis, Stranger Things star Gaten Matarazzo, This Is Us actor Mandy Moore, and singer Sia — just to name a handful!

Waffles + Mochi is just the latest output from the Obamas’ production company, Higher Ground Productions. According to Entertainment Weekly, the company has already been responsible for a few films on Netflix, including American Factory, Becoming, and Crip Camp. Co-created by Jeremy Konner and Erika Thormahlen, the show is also executive produced by Michelle and Barack themselves, and is scheduled for a 10-episode run beginning in mid-March.
