Artist of the Week: Lorde

The ‘Royals’ hitmaker gets flirty with summer anthem ‘Solar Power’ as she returns with a new album and leaves behind her heartbreak and solitude in previous LP ‘Melodrama’.

AceShowbizLorde is back with new music. The “Royals” hitmaker is celebrating summer with her new breezy single “Solar Power” from the upcoming third studio album of the same title. For the accompanying music video, she takes her fans to a beautiful beach for a relaxing day.

At the same time, she wants people to get to know her better by showing off the place where she was born and raised. “I made something that encapsulates where I’m from – my family, my girlfriends, my outdoors, my constant ruminations, and my unending search for the divine [sic],” so she explained.

Featuring backing vocals from rising stars Phoebe Bridgers and Clairo, the single was produced and written by Lorde and Jack Antonoff. It climbed to No. 2 in Lorde’s home country of New Zealand, No. 14 in Australia, and No. 6 on Billboard Hot Rock & Alternative Songs.

With soft rock vibes, the song drew comparison to George Michael‘s hit single “Freedom! ’90”. Responding to the comparison, his estate had nothing but love for her, “George would have been flattered to hear, so on behalf of one great artist to a fellow artist, we wish her every success with the single.”

Meanwhile, Lorde described her new sound as a hybrid of folk and bubblegum pop, “The sound is sort of ’60s/’70s folk with early 2000s bubblegum pop. It’s a little bit S Club, a little bit TLC, mixed with like, your classics – Fleetwood Mac. It’s quite a buzzy mix.”

Her next studio installment is due in August this year. It’s her first LP in four years since 2017’s critically-acclaimed album “Melodrama”, which earned her a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year.

While her previous set was full of solitude following her first breakup, the next one is expected to see the 24-year-old singer/songwriter leave her heartbreak behind.

“She’s sexy, playful, feral, and free,” Lorde teased her new alter ego. “She’s a modern girl in a deadstock bikini, in touch with her past and her future, vibrating at the highest level when summer comes around. Her skin is glowing, her lovers are many.”
