Bayern Munich's Joshua Kimmich ruled out for the rest of the year after knee surgery following injury in Dortmund win

JOSHUA KIMMICH will be out of action until next year after having knee surgery following an injury picked up over the weekend.

Kimmich, 25, sustained the injury to his right lateral meniscus during Bayern Munich's 3-2 victory over rivals Borussia Dortmund on Saturday.

He was forced off injured in the 36th minute of the Bundesligia's Der Klassiker showdown after attempting to halt Dortmund's Erik Haaland.

In a double blow for the player, he was also shown a yellow card for his lunge as he left the field in pain.

The German national had an operation on his knee on Sunday.

Despite his injury, Bayern are optimistic about his return and think he should be back in action soon.

Speaking on Kimmich's injury, Bayern's sporting dircetor Hasan Salihamidzic said: "We're glad that Joshua (Kimmich) will probably be available again in a matter of weeks.

"We'll support him in his rehabilitation as best we can."

The defender's injury made it a bittersweet weekend for Bayern who claimed top spot in the Bundesligia after their win.

It put them three points above Dortmund who currently languish in third place.

Ex-Manchester City ace Leroy Sane also made the headlines after he rounded off Bayern's win with his first ever Der Klassiker goal – and his fourth in seven appearances for the German champions.

Sane, 24, joined the Champions League winners in the summer from City for £54.8million.

The winger scored 39 goals in 135 City appearances but fell out of favour with Pep Guardiola after a series of injuries and refusal to sign a new contract.
