How to turn your university student's bedroom into a guest room on a budget

IS your child about to leave home to go off to university?

Two-thirds of parents immediately turn the free space into a guest bedroom, AA Financial Services found.

If that includes you, now is the time to take advantage of student ranges and redecorate on a budget.

Sleep easy with these bedroom bargains . . .

  1. Add some character: The colour and feel of a bedroom can be transformed easily by changing the bed linen. You can currently save 25 per cent on a variety of bedding at Wilko. I like the pink pintuck double duvet set, now £15, down from £20. Dog lovers can bag a checked sausage-dog single-duvet set for £9, down from £12.
    SAVING: 25 per cent
  2. Pack it in: Storage boxes are great for students and parents alike. They are an easy way to hide away clutter. Underbed storage can be handy for messy students in particular and you can grab four Strata 30-litre underbed storage boxes for £15 at Argos. A stylish alternative is the foldable, silver-velvet cube ottoman from Dunelm, on sale for £12, down from £16.
    SAVING: £4 at Dunelm
  3. Fairy nice: To create your own sidetable lantern, you need only a mason jar and a set of fairy lights. Simply put the lights inside the jar and turn on at night to create a lovely cosy glow. You can get a pack of 20 warm-white LED micro battery fairy lights at lights4fun.co.uk for just £2.99, down from £6.99.
    SAVING: £4
  4. Game of throws: Cosy throws and throw- cushions are always fantastic accessories. Bag two jumbo throw-cushions for £12 at Asda. They come in a variety of colours and usually cost £7 each. You can also save money on selected throws and blankets at Wilko. I like the blush waffle throw which is now just £8, down from £16.
