I broke up with my girlfriend because I want to be single

DEAR DEIDRE: I LOVE my girlfriend but I broke up with her because I want to be single.

I am 19, she is 20 and we have been together for almost a year. She’s incredible but I miss my freedom.

I don’t want to date other girls, I just want to be independent and spend time with family and friends without feeling I have to call or text her.

When I told her, she was devastated and begged me to try to reconsider. I feel torn.

DEIDRE SAYS: It’s normal for feelings to change during our teens and early 20s. My support pack, Learning About Relationships, explains more.

It’s horrible to hurt someone you love, but heartbreak is a part of life.
You can’t stay with her simply to avoid hurting her.

If the relationship is meant to be, perhaps you can get back together in the future.
