Whenever he wanted to use a little, he whacked out his grater and gave his frozen chilli a few quick runs across the blades.

Jamie captioned his post: “Top tip for saving those chillis you've got hanging about in the fridge or have grown at home!

”Simply pop them in the freezer as they’re fantastic finely grated directly from frozen, which creates tasty, beautiful chilli dust that is great in cooking and marinades.

“Or, for sprinkling over pasta, salads, starters, antipasti, meat or fish dishes!!”

The post racked up almost 9,000 likes and 1,500 comments.

People were impressed as the hack means saying no to food waste.

Plus, a light chilli sprinkle on avocado toast or spaghetti is bound to ramp up the flavour.

In the comments, many home cooks said they grew their own chilli in the summer and froze it to use in the winter.

One person said: “What a great idea – to grate them. I always keep chilis in the freezer, but never thought to do that!”

While a fourth added: “Your tip is great, use it all the time, no waste, thanks Jamie!"
