While medics have clearly stated that surgical masks are ineffective at preventing the contraction of coronavirus, they still seem to be a highly sought after item.
Pharmacies and online shops have been stripped bare of the mouth-coving masks in recent weeks.
That may be the reason why one woman decided to have a go at making her own mask… out of her bra.
NHS administrator, Gemma Harman, 40, saw the hack online and decided to give the viral trick a try.
If done correctly, the cup is supposed to sit over the nose and mouth while the straps are secured to hold it in place.
Unfortunately, Gemma is a size 42FF and realised that the cup fit over her entire head.
The mum couldn’t stop laughing when she realised the mistake.
Gemma said: “I saw that people were wearing their bras as face masks.
"They were all very slender young women and their masks fit beautifully – nice and tidy over their noses and mouths.
"I don't think most women would be able to make their bra fit them so well as a face mask. I wondered what would happen if I tried.”
Gemma, from Kent, continued: "I am not young nor slender so I knew there was no way I was going to be able to do it. The cup covered my entire face.
"I would be really well protected because there's no way anything would be getting through it.
“Although I might end up with a couple of bruises from bumping into things. I couldn't see a thing."
The NHS worker got her husband, Steve Harman, 45, to take some funny photographs and posted them to social media.
She said: "Because I couldn't see, I had to get my husband to take photos of me. He couldn't believe he was taking photos of me with a bra over my head.
"When I posted them on Facebook, he had this look on his face as if to say 'here she goes again'.
“Steve is very sensible but I never take life too seriously and I'm always taking the mick out of myself."
Key worker Gemma is in self-isolation due to suffering from diabetes.
The condition makes her more susceptible to complications if she contracts the killer virus.
While Gemma posted the snaps to cheer up her friends, she was shocked when it went viral.
Gemma said: "At first I posted just for my friends and everyone was commenting how hilarious it was and asking if they could share it so I made it public and it went crazy.
"I'm quite glad the bra covered my head because I had no makeup on and my hair was in a mum bun. I'm quite made up that my no makeup mum bun face didn't go viral.”
She added: “Everybody has found it really funny. It has been really nice to put some joy out there. Everyone needs something to laugh about at the moment.
"It's a really quite worrying time but you can't let it get you down so I'm trying to stay positive and keep cracking jokes."
Mum who never punishes four kids gives parenting tips about 'un-homeschooling'
Remember, the best defence against COVID-19 is to wash your hands for 20 seconds when entering or leaving the home.
It is also advised that you wash your hands, and any produce, before cooking and eating.
Takeaway packaging or parcels should be sanitised or disposed of outside of the home.
Stay safe, and stay home.
