DEAR DEIDRE: FROM time to time I treat my friend to a burger at McDonald’s to say thank you for giving me a lift to work.
One evening recently he asked for a double order, costing much more.
I didn’t think too much of it and paid the bill.
He then told me that the other half was for his wife.
I couldn’t believe it. I wouldn’t have minded so much but he passes me on the way to work so isn’t even going out of his way to pick me up.
I am 26 and he is 28. I am not happy about this and, as a result, am no longer talking to him.
How should I handle this?

DEIDRE SAYS: Not talking just creates bad feeling and this guy may have no idea what he’s done that so galled you.
Tell him you were taken aback when he ordered double, as you have to be careful with your finances and hadn’t realised he felt giving you a lift was that much of a demand.
My e-leaflet Standing Up For Yourself can help you be assertive without being aggressive – always a good skill.
