The world’s oldest golden retriever is celebrating her 20th birthday — a truly impressive milestone given that the average life expectancy of the breed is 10 to 12 years.

August, whose owners Jennifer and Steve Hetterscheidt call her Augie, turned 20 on April 24 and celebrated with a cake and some fluffy friends.

She has lived with the couple in Oakland, Tennessee since age 14, and thanks to their care, has managed to live twice as long as most dogs of her kind.

Happy birthday! August, whose owners Jennifer and Steve Hetterscheidt call her Augie, turned 20 on April 24

Amazing! She has lived with the couple in Oakland, Tennessee since age 14, and thanks to their care, has managed to live twice as long as most dogs of her kind

According Goldheart Golden Retrievers Rescue in Tennessee, there have been accounts of golden retrievers living to age 17 or 18 — but Augie is extra special.

On her birthday, she got to celebrate with a dog-friendly carrot cake, and also played with the couple’s other dogs, Sherman, Belle, and Bruce.

Though she’s certainly getting on in age and is a bit shaky, the couple says she still enjoys daily walks.

She also gets SQ fluids twice a week, takes supplements, and eats a mix of wet and dry Hill’s Prescription Diet k/d that she began after some kidney issues that started when she was 14.

After Augie was born in 2000, she was rehomed twice before finding her ‘furever’ home with the Hetterscheidts at 14 years old.

‘They figured that most people wouldn’t want such an elderly golden, but they had no idea of the upcoming journey they would be on with Augie,’ the shelter said.

The couple also has several others dogs and cats, and have taken Augie on RV trips around the country.

‘She’s lived so long largely because she’s got great genetics, but also her owner, Jennifer, has done a great job of taking care of her and ensuring that they have a good relationship with Augie’s vet,’ wrote the staff of the rescue.

‘We care for them as long as we have them, and love them forever,’ added Jennifer.

Flashback: Maggie the Kelpie, an Australian dog that was thought to be the oldest in the world, died at the age of 30 in 2016

Meanwhile, the oldest dog ever, according to a 2016 Today show article, was a 30-year-old Kelpie named Maggie.

‘She was 30 years old, she was still going along nicely last week, she was walking from the dairy to the office and growling at the cats and all that sort of thing,’ dairy farmer Brian McLaren of Victoria, Australia told The Weekly Times shortly after her death.

Before that, Guinness World Records North America had named an Australian cattle-dog named Bluey the oldest dog ever.

Bluey, who was cared for by Les Hall of Rochester, Victoria, Australia, lived to be 29 years and five months old and died in 1939.
