Firebrand congressman Steve King loses 10th-term reelection bid to rival Republican in Iowa primary vote – The Sun

US Congressman Steve King, who once questioned why white supremacy was offensive, has lost his bid for reelection in Iowa, which would have been his 10th term of sitting.

King was a divisive official who called for a Mexico wall to be buillt in 2006 and endorsed a Toronto mayoral candidate with neo-Nazi ties.

The firebrand congressman, who was called out by his colleagues last year for using hateful rhetoric, lost his bid as a Republican rival defeated him for their party's nomination in an Iowa primary election.

Voters in the district had returned King to Congress before despite his incendiary comments, often directed against immigrants.

Tuesday's vote came at a particularly charged moment, as major cities have seen widespread protests over the killing by Minneapolis police of George Floyd last week.

The House last year overwhelmingly voted to repudiate King's comments questioning why "white supremacy" is offensive, with King himself joining in that vote. The House stripped him of his committee assignments as a result.

A month later, he wondered aloud whether the human race would exist without rape and incest, prompting renewed calls for him to step down.

Randy Feenstra, a state senator who had the backing of several major Republican organizations, was projected by several news organizations as the winner in Iowa's 4th congressional district.

His victory increases the odds that Republicans will hold onto the seat in November.

King urged construction of a border wall in 2006, nearly a decade before Trump ran for president calling for the same.

In April this year, King told the Westside Conservative Club that humanity might not exist if were not for rape and incest.

"What if we went back through all the family trees and just pulled those people out that were products of rape and incest? Would there be any population of the world left if we did that?" he said at the event in Urbandale, Iowa.

"Considering all the wars and all the rapes and pillages taken place and whatever happened to culture after society? I know I can't certify that I'm not a part of a product of that."

The Kiron Republican was defending his position of not allowing exceptions for rape and incest in the anti-abortion legislation he tried to pass in Congress.

"I’ve got 174 people who say they don’t want exceptions for rape and incest because they understand it is not the baby’s fault, to abort the baby, because of the sin of the father, and maybe sometimes the sin of the mother too," he said at the time.

"And so I refused to do that."

The loss of his committee posts gave a new opening to King's opponents to question his effectiveness.

Feenstra focused his attacks on King by arguing that he was no longer an effective ally for Trump in Washington.
King's political baggage had endangered the seat for Republicans; in 2018, amid a Democratic wave, J.D. Scholten came within 3 percentage points of beating King.
Scholten ran again, unopposed, in the Democratic primary on Tuesday, but his chances are considerably longer against Feenstra.

The Director Of "Tiger King" Has Now Paid Restaurant Staff He Laid Off Due To The Coronavirus Pandemic

We may all be at home, but that hasn’t stopped our reporters from breaking exclusive stories like this one. To help keep this news free, become a member and sign up for our newsletter, Outbreak Today.

Eric Goode, the wealthy co-director and executive producer of the Netflix documentary series Tiger King and the owner of a vast hospitality group, sent checks Friday to staff he had laid off at one of his New York City restaurants amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Four staffers of Goode’s B Bar and Grill in Manhattan had told BuzzFeed News last month they were pleading for financial help from their former boss, who owns several restaurants and hotels. Some of the staff had worked there for more than 20 years before the sudden termination in late March.

“We made him a lot of money,” Arturo Vasquez, who worked for Goode for 22 years at B Bar, most recently as a chef, told BuzzFeed News at the time. “I was always there. I never missed it. … At the least, leave me with compensation or something to help with this problem we have.”

“They have families, they have children, they have mortgages to pay, and they spent a lot of their life working for B Bar,” Luis Lugo, a former floor manager, told BuzzFeed News at the time. “You’re the director of Tiger King and you own the Jane Hotel and you’re not a small mom-and-pop shop that’s struggling. You’re someone that has the financial resources to make a difference.”

One month after that story, Goode informed staff in a May 12 letter that he “been working to secure financial compensation for everyone displaced by this pandemic.” Under the arrangement, which Goode described “as a start,” all hourly employees who had worked at the restaurant for more than a year would be given one week of averaged pay. Staff who had been there more than five years would be given two weeks’ worth.

Lugo and a server who had worked there for more than four years confirmed to BuzzFeed News they received payments on Friday. For the server, the roughly $300 was welcome, but the server feared that undocumented former colleagues who cannot access unemployment would need more.

“This is too little, too late,” the server said. “This amount of money would have been helpful the week after B Bar closed. I don’t know why it took two months.”

“It was upsetting to see him conduct interviews about Tiger King while we waited in earnest for him to pay us paid time off because of the COVID-19 crisis,” the server said. “I think it was clear he was prioritizing the success and press of Tiger King before the struggles of his longtime employees.”

Goode owns the site of the restaurant in the trendy NoHo neighborhood and last year signed a 99-year ground lease with a development tenant worth almost $60 million.

In his letter to staff, Goode said he “will continue to evaluate all programs to aid future employee assistance.”

Goode did not respond to a request for comment on this story or the previous report.

North Korea stays silent on Kim Jong-un’s health fuelling speculation over ‘heart surgery’ reports

SECRETIVE North Korea is staying silent amid claims Kim Jong-un is fighting for his life after having an emergency heart operation.

State media presented a business as usual image carrying routine reports of Kim's achievements and publishing his older or undated quotes on issues like the economy.

As usual Kim's name was plastered all over the state newspaper Rodong Sinmun but there was no actual information on his whereabouts fuelling the reports he is gravely ill.

However it did claim he had sent birthday gifts to prominent citizens without saying when.

Today the main headlines from the official news outlet KCNA included pieces on the development of sports equipment and fruit picking.

Those monitoring North Korea from outside its borders have found it impossible to get to the bottom of the health claims.

However, reporting on Kim's kingdom is notoriously difficult given the strict controls on the release of information.

On Tuesday it had been claimed it was not known if Kim was "dead or alive" following the apparent surgery.

One senior White House reporter reported she had been told Trump officials were already looking into who would be in line for succession.

However, both South Korea and China later said they believed reports he was in "grave danger" were unfounded.

“We have no information to confirm regarding rumors about Chairman Kim Jong-un’s health issue that have been reported,” South Korean presidential spokesman Kang Min-seok said.

“Also, no unusual developments have been detected inside North Korea.”

North Korea's supreme leader, 36, missed the celebration of his grandfather Kim Il Sung's birthday on April 15, first sparking speculation about his health and was last seen on April 11.

It has been claimed he is currently recovering at a villa in the resort town of Hyangsan after undergoing a "cardiovascular surgical procedure" on April 12.

Kim's health had deteriorated in recent months due to heavy smoking, obesity, and overwork, according to reports from the region.

Last night Donald Trump offered his support Kim following reports of the leader's dire health.

Speaking at a press conference, Trump said: "I’ve had a very good relationship with him.

"I can only say this, I wish him well, because if he is in the kind of condition that the reports say, that the news is saying, that’s a very serious condition, as you know," he said.

"I've said it and I’ve said it many times. If somebody else were in this position, we would’ve been right now at war with North Korea."

The president also used the topic to hit out at CNN, saying that the reports had "not been confirmed," and that he had seen the news on the network by did not give it much credence.

He added, "but it sounds very serious."

"I just hope he's doing fine. I've had a very good relationship with Kim Jong-un.

"I'd like to see him well. I don't know if the reports are true."

If reports are proven to be true, the future of the nuclear state hangs in the balance, as Kim has seemingly not declared a successor.

One of those tipped to take over at the helm is Kim's own power-hungry sister Kim Yo-Jong.

Trump and Kim have shared a positive relationship following early tensions over North Korea's nuclear capabilities.

In June 2019, Trump became the first sitting U.S. president to step into North Korea, crossing the 1953 armistice line separating North and South Korea for a meeting with Kim.

However regional experts believe the rogue state's hardline stance and its nuke programme will go on – even without 'Rocket Man' Kim.

“I would be surprised if you didn’t have another hardliner who more or less kept North Korea as it is, so I’m not sure that North Korea would suddenly implode,” Robin Kelly, a professor at Pusan National University, told Bloomberg.

“We need to kind of accept that North Korea is reasonably stable and will be with us for awhile.”

Others agreed life will go on pretty much as usual in the hermit kingdom.

“It is the outside world’s wishful thinking that North Korea’s ruling system will collapse if another Kim passes away,” said Cheong Seong-chang, of the Sejong Institute’s Center for North Korean Studies.

“With the broader leadership of the regime sharing the same interests with the Kim family, a prolonged leadership vacuum is highly unlikely.”
