Several shows have had a hard time acclimating to the reality of the world with the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Filming for most movies and tv shows has been put on pause while the networks figure out how to proceed in a safe manner. 90 Day Fiancé, on the other hand, has produced new shows during the pandemic and another one is set to premiere in October.
Which ’90 Day Fiancé’ shows have been filmed during the pandemic?
90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days was airing during the height of lockdown in the United States. Normally the tell-all reunion special is filmed with most of the cast in one location but due to the nature of the pandemic, TLC decided to film the reunion virtually. After that show finished, TLC produced a show called 90 Day Fiancé: B90 Strikes Back!, which allowed the cast of Before the 90 Days to record themselves reacting to their season and the comments made by fans. During this time, TLC also came out with 90 Day Fiancé: Self-Quarantined, which had past cast members film their lives in quarantine.
Two new shows set to premiere
TLC and the producers of 90 Day Fiancé have no plans of letting a pandemic stop them from producing tv.
During the Edinburgh International TV Festival panel, Howard Lee, President and General Manager of TLC, announced that there are “probably one or two [more shows] that [they] are actively working on.”
“We always want to check in on our fans to ensure that we’re not getting past the tipping point or saturation and that this is something that they’d want to see and so far we’ve been really fortunate that they’re still finding these projects compelling,” he said, according to Deadline.
At the time, Lee wasn’t exactly sure what the new shows would be about as they were still trying out new ideas.
“We’re OK if it’s docu-follow or if it’s social experiment, we’re very much open to that. If it’s just plain old dating, it has to be extraordinary, there has to be a hook,” he said. “We’re open arms for anything like that. The casting, at the end of the day, has to be compelling. We’re looking for real people, they don’t have to be glamorous but they could be, they could be from the East Coast or West Coast or any part of America, physically they could be any size, shape, or form, TLC is representative of who our audience looks like.”
‘Happily Ever After Strikes Back’
If there is one thing the 90 Day Fiancé franchise is good at, it’s coming up with a spinoff. Following the success of B90 Strikes Back!, TLC is adding HEA Strikes Back!, a spinoff of Happily Ever After?,to its lineup.
The show will catch up with the couples of Happily Ever After? and give them the chance to rewatch their storylines, comment on what happened, and react to fans.
As with any spinoff, TLC wants to make sure that the content is new and interesting enough for fans to tune in.
“It’s very important that we don’t just create a spin-off or sequel just for the sake of it,” Lee said. “We want to make sure that we’re not just ripping ourselves off, franchise after franchise.”
HEA Strikes Back! will premiere after the finale of Happily Ever After? on Oct. 5 at 9 p.m. ET.
