Comedian Steve Royle is the first Britain’s Got Talent act to have secured a place in the Grand Final.
The northern comic took part in the competition’s first semi final tonight, where he was placed in the judges’ top three performers of the night, also including singer Fayth Ifil and father and son magic duo James and Dylan Piper.
Earlier on the night, Steve had wowed David Walliams, Alesha Dixon, Amanda Holden and Ashley Banjo with a wide-ranging comedy routine including physical gags, a trip off the stage and even some high kicks for good measure.
And it seems that the judges all adored him, as he got a full set of votes and a unanimous decision to send him throubg.
‘I have to go with my heart,’ David Walliams said. ‘People who make me laugh jus thrill me to the very core of my being.’
Alesha added that Steve’s routine ‘reduced me to tears of joy, sadness and everything, [you] just had me in hysterics.’
Diversity star Ashley gave the deciding vote that sent Steve through, commenting: ‘I’m going to go with what moved me, what impressed me and what gave me the biggest buzz tonight, I think that was Steve.’
When asked by hosts Ant and Dec is she would also have voted for Steve, head judge Amanda agreed, saying she would have backed him ‘all the way.’
The remainder of the acts from tonight’s semi are now left to the mercy of the public vote, with viewers given until Monday to decide who to sent through the final.
They will have to choose from Fayth and the Pipers, as well as dance troupe Urban Turtles, choir SOS From The Kids, solo dancer Yakub, singer Imen Siar and marine turned magician James Stott.
Tonight, BGT also played host to Diversity, who wowed both the judges and people at home as they gave a stirring performance, taking the knee in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.
Troupe member Ashley is also filling in for Simon Cowell as a judge, as the Syco mogul recovers from back surgery.
As always, the winner of Britain’s Got Talent will win a coveted performance slot at next year’s Royal Variety.
Britain’s Got Talent returns next Saturday at 8pm on ITV.
