Corrie star reveals huge plans for Daniel were changed

Coronation Street star Rob Mallard has revealed how Daniel Osbourne was initially going to be a very different character upon his re-entry to the soap several years back.

The character appeared in the ITV soap back in the mid-90s, and re-appeared in 2007.

Rob took over the role in 2016 when Daniel returned to the cobbles, and the actor revealed that plans for the character were altered somewhat.

He told Inside Soap: ‘When Daniel was brought back to Corrie, the idea was floated that he was a new Ken Barlow – but that’s not who he’s turned out to be.

‘You can tell he’s Ken’s son, but he’s a completely different entity to his dad, which I’m glad about.

‘If I’d come in dressed like him and saying Ken-isms, it just wouldn’t have worked. It was good to have a template to build on, though.’

In addition to discussing the alterations made to Daniel, Rob also revealed what qualities he admires the most in his character.

He said: ‘He’s cynical, but I think you would be if you’d had that many tragic things happen to you, wouldn’t you?

‘All the books he reads are about unrequited love and people who mope about on windy moors, so I think that kind of suits him.

Viewers have seen Daniel attempt to come to terms with the loss of beloved wife Sinead (Katie McGlynn) over the past year, and in recent episodes, he’s been growing closer to sex worker Nicky Wheatley (Kimberly-Hart Simpson).

Coronation Street continues Friday 31 July at 7:30pm on ITV.
