Vikings: Amazon Prime release trailer for final season
Erik the Red (played by Eric Johnson) is one of the main characters in the final half of Vikings season six. He was a friend of King Harald (Peter Franzén), but he was not afraid to take power for himself once Harald had left Kattegat. Express.co.uk has all you need to know about the real Erik, and whether he ever came across Ingrid (Lucy Martin).
Did the real Erik the Red meet Ingrid?
Both Erik and Ingrid played pivotal roles in the final episodes of Vikings, as they were both keen to lead the people of Kattegat.
King Harald had held the position before the Rus battle, but he was captured by the Rus army.
The position of ruler of Kattegat was then left open, and his new wife Ingrid, who had previously been married to Bjorn Ironside (Alexander Ludwig), was keen to take on the role.
Unfortunately for her, Erik also had his eye on the crown, and he and Ingrid had a complex history.
Throughout the final episodes, Ingrid gave viewers some insight into how she had known Erik.

She had been a slave under his watch, as he had previously been in the slave trade business.
She ended up confronting him about how he had treated her, but he showed little remorse.
Ingrid, who turned out to be witch, used her powers to encourage the gods to turn Erik blind.
Without his sight, Erik became powerless, and this gave Ingrid the opportunity to take control.
Fans were shocked to find out how she had been scheming with another slave she once knew, who had been sold by Erik.
She and the slave worked together to devise a cunning plan to kill Erik, and they succeeded.
Erik’s character is based on the real Erik the Red – a Norse explorer who was known to have created the first settlement in Greenland.
The creators of Vikings took some inspiration from the real historical figure, although in the series it was Ubbe (Jordan Patrick Smith), Kjetill (Adam Copeland) and the other settlers who discovered the land.
The real Erik Thorvaldsson is believed to have coined the nickname due to the colour of his hair.
There is no mention of Erik ever coming across a historical figure called Ingrid, and this is due to the fact her character was created for the series alone.

Ingrid was a popular name during the Viking age, and it has inspired other creative works such as the book Ingrid, The Viking Maiden.
Ingrid’s feisty character was created as one of the most fearless and powerful female stars of the series.
She had one of the most dramatic arcs in the final episodes, and her storyline was full of surprising twists as she had her revenge against Erik.
The real Erik the Red married a woman called Þjódhild Jorundsdottir and they had four children together.
His wife was interested in Christianity and was known to have commissioned the first church in Greenland.
Erik, like the Erik in the series, strongly disagreed with Christian beliefs and he remained true to his Pagan ways.
His relationship with Ingrid was fictional and it came to be one of the most surprising elements of the final 10 episodes.
Ingrid was finally able to take the crown and rule Kattegat after she successfully completed her plan to have Erik killed.
Her fellow slave ended up stabbing him with a pitchfork, while Ingrid gave the impression she had no idea of the plan.
Actor Johnson is on Instagram and he shared a photo of himself as Erik, with his face covered in blood.
One fan said: “Amazing make up. You certainly look like a real danish Viking.”
