Ex-Corrie star Sally Lindsay fundraising for Alzheimer's in memory of late gran

Former Coronation Street star Sally Lindsay has opened up on her fundraising efforts after losing her grandma to Alzheimer’s 20 years ago.

The 47-year-old appeared on Lorraine this morning where she spoke about her involvement with the Alzheimer’s Society.

And while the coronavirus pandemic has stopped people from meeting up this year to take part in the annual memory walk (a sponsored event where people affected by the disease come together to remember their loved ones), it turns out the actress will still do the stroll, however, this year she’ll be going it alone.

Addressing why it is more important than ever for people to get involved with the charity, the star said: ‘Basically we have been hit really hard with coronavirus. 70% of people in care homes have dementia.

‘And also we haven’t been able to fundraise so we usually have a memory walk where loads of people walk together in memory of a loved one and it’s a lovely empowering thing.

‘We can’t do it this year so we’re doing it on our own. We’ll film our walk and upload it and it raises much-needed funds for society to help those in the community with Alzheimer’s.

‘It’s great we thought it wasn’t going to happen this year and it is.’

Sally will be joined by her dog on the walk, which she is doing for her grandma, who sadly died more than two decades ago.

‘She was such an important figure to me,’ the mum-of-two explained. ‘This disease takes away our memories so it’s brilliant to get all these people together to remember the loved ones they had.’

The star is known for playing Shelley Unwin in the popular soap, however, she decided to step away from the role in 2006.

However, she has not ruled out making a return, and said on Good Morning Britain in 2017: ‘I’d love to (go back in) but I’m afraid this year – no time. I love Corrie, it’s great. It’s like I’m putting it down but I’m not it’s moved on.

‘It’s a juggernaut that moves on and it was wonderful being there and I’ve got lifelong friends from that but that was the past.’

Sally was involved in a number of huge story lines, including Shelley’s marriage to Peter Barlow, as well as her abusive relationship with Charlie Stubbs.
