Johnny Depp discusses Pirates of the Caribbean in 2017
Pirates of the Caribbean became a billion dollar franchise for Disney over the course of its five films. The latest movie, Dead Men Tell No Tales, was released in 2017, but was deemed a slight failure, as it only garnered $794 million at the box office. Since then, Captain Jack Sparrow star Johnny Depp has been involved in a very public court case against a British newspaper, and his ex-wife Amber Heard. During this case, Depp was branded a “wife beater”, and subsequently lost his job working with Warner Bros. on the third film in Harry Potter’s Fantastic Beasts franchise.
Throughout 2020 rumours suggested Depp had also been dropped from Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean series.
This had never been confirmed, and is a little hard to swallow for fans, as Depp is the life and soul of the series.
However, a new report has now claimed the star is, in fact, out of the franchise for good.
The report suggests that Pirates of the Caribbean’s producer, and Depp’s longterm friend, Jerry Bruckheimer, was pushing for the 57-year-old to return for the next movie.

But the THR report explains that Disney “balked” at the idea of bringing Depp back.
If true, this is a massive blow to the series, as the Edward Scissorhands star arguably made the series what it is today.
It was previously thought that Depp would be included in the new films as a cameo character – but to no avail.
Unhappy fans have turned to a petition on Change.org in recent months, crying out for Disney to rehire Depp for the next film.
That petition recently hit 400,000 signatures, proving just how much people want to see the Hollywood legend in the film.
Johnny Depp arrives at High Court for final day of libel hearing
No news or title has been announced for the upcoming sixth Pirates of the Caribbean film, but considering how much money the previous films made at the box office, it is almost certain it will arrive eventually.
News was accidentally dropped in November by Margot Robbie, however, over her involvement in the series.
Rumours in summer of 2020 suggested the Harley Quinn star would be taking over as the new face of the franchise.
While the rumours were left unsubstantiated for a time, she inadvertently revealed how she is going to be bringing some “girl power” to the series.

Since then, further reports have surfaced suggesting how Robbie is going to be changing the franchise drastically.
A source recently claimed that Robbie is working with Disney to change up the casting of the next film.
The insider revealed the House of Mouse are keen to see less-represented groups in the front and centre of the films to come.
That’s not all, however, as the apparent push for diversity is also going to bleed into Marvel and Star Wars series.
Robbie’s former co-worker, Christina Hodson, is also writing the next film.
Hodson is best known for bringing Birds of Prey to screen – which also starred Robbie.
Speaking about working with Hodson, Robbie explained last year: “It’s too early to talk about it… I love Christina, obviously. I’m not a producer on Pirates, so I’ll sit back and kind of wait for the process. We’re really, really excited at the prospect of adding obviously a very key female element to that world.”
The Pirates of the Caribbean films are available on Disney Plus now.
