The Last Kingdom is a popular Netflix historical drama based on The Saxon Stories by author Bernard Cornwell.

The series was renewed for a fifth season last year and filming is underway, with Uhtred star Alexander Dreymon making the announcement in a video.

Sadly fans have just discovered season five, based on the books Warriors of the Storm and The Flame Bearer, will be the last.

Executive producer Nigel Merchant said in a statement: “We had such a tremendous response to the last season, so are thrilled to be bringing it back for a fifth and final season on Netflix.

“With such a loyal fanbase, we’re excited to give viewers a chance to follow Uhtred on the next stage of his epic quest, where not everyone survives.”

With this in mind, there will be some major deaths in the upcoming season and fans are already guessing who will meet their demise.

At this moment in time, no reason has been given as to why the series is coming to an end.

With The Saxon Stories consisting of 13 books, fans were expecting at least a sixth season for the TV adaptation.
