If you’re one of those people who’s totally done with the singular obsession with super heroes, and the impossibly perfect image/lifestyle that movie stars who play superheroes have to maintain, have I got a satirical series for you. The Boys, streaming on Amazon Prime, posits a world where caped crusaders are jerks that deserve to be #canceled and the real vigilante heroes are just regular people like us. Seems plausible, right?
If and when you’ve zoomed your way though the first two seasons, here’s everything you need to know about The Boys season 3. My one request is that hopefully there won’t be any more freaky sex scenes in The Boys, as I’m all out of eye bleach. Please.
The Boys Season 3 is actually happening, right?
You betcha! The show got renewed by Amazon for a third season even before the second season dropped. Wouldn’t it be nice if more shows were like this? Nobody’s got time for the anxiety we feel when we don’t know if a season finale is actually, secretly, a series finale.
The good news is that Hollywood is getting back to work now, and The Boys Season 3 probably won’t be as delayed as some 2020 shows and films. The bad news is that it will still probably be at least a year before The Boys returns. A year passed between season 1 and season 2, so it’s only fair.
Is there even a comic that The Boys season 3 would be based on?
Maybe? First of all, it’s wild that a story that’s so critical of comic book mania is based on a comic book, but it is! The adaptation’s not as cut and dry as, like, a novel series that gets one movie per book. If you use your investigative skills and cross-reference The Boys episode titles with the titles of various volumes/story arcs in Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s comic series, you’ll find that they’re all there, but in a totally different order. The Amazon show is taking liberties with the source material, but there are plenty of arcs from the comics that haven’t been covered in the series.
Who’s gonna be in The Boys Season 3?
Jensen Ackles, ever heard of him? (He’s the guy from Supernatural your cousin/sister/roommate that’s always on Tumblr is obsessed with.) Ackles will play Soldier Boy, a spoof of Captain America who is sure to face off against Homelander, another… spoof on Captain America. His Supernatural co-star Jeffrey Dean Morgan may also be joining the series, but that has not been officially confirmed.
What else do we know?
We’re gonna learn that Kimiko is super into classic movie musicals — I’m talking Seven Brides and Seven Brothers, not The Greatest Showman. It’s just now dawning on me that The Boys has a surprising amount of female characters, given the name of the show... but there can always be more! Season 2 added Aya Cash as Stormfront and gave a bigger storyline to Kimiko, thank goodness. As for more specific details about The Boys Season 3, we’re going to have to wait… and honestly? Maybe, as the show teaches us, a break from superheroes is what we need.
