What happened to Lucy in EastEnders and who killed her?

EastEnders fans are being taken back in time to 2015 tonight, as an iconic hour-long episode from the acclaimed ‘Who Killed Lucy Beale?’ saga is airing on BBC One.

With the soap having been forced to halt production amid the Covid-19 pandemic, episodes were rationed out to keep it on air.

However, with the final pre-lockdown episode having aired on June 16, the serial drama was forced to go off the air for the first time ever.

In order to ensure viewers get their weekly Walford fix, iconic episodes from days gone by are being re-shown on Tuesday evenings in a primetime BBC One slot.

The classic Den and Angie two-hander was first, followed by Sharongate, then Syed and Amira’s unforgettable wedding, the wonderful Pride episode from last year, Pat and Peggy’s ’98 showdown, and now it’s ‘Who Killed Lucy?’

But just what happened to Lucy?

What happened to Lucy in EastEnders?

Lucy Beale (Hetti Bywater) exited the Beale household on Good Friday back in 2014 — in the 4,480th episode of the soap — and took one final look at the iconic residence before heading down the market.

As the ‘Doof Doof’ of this particular episode sounded, the young woman’s body was seen lying lifeless on Walford Common.

The following day she was discovered by a young girl, and Ian (Adam Woodyatt) was informed of the heart-breaking news.

Stellar storytelling and wonderful narrative twists left viewers on the edge of their seat for the duration of a whole year, as multiple Walford residents were revealed to have had motive enough to want Lucy dead.

The hour-long edition which is being re-shown tonight — which is both the soap’s 5017th and 5018th — saw Ian connect the dots and discover the truth, as he confronted Jane (Laurie Brett) — demanding to know what happened on the night Lucy died.

Who Killed Lucy in EastEnders?

In spite of tonight’s classic episode making it appear as if Jane was responsible for Lucy’s death, this wasn’t actually the case.

You see, it was revealed in the following instalment — which was a flashback episode to the night in which the young woman died — that it was, in fact, Bobby Beale (Eliot Carrington) who delivered the striking blow.

Yes, Bobby hit his sister with the jewellery box as he believed that she ‘made everyone unhappy’, and Jane arrived home to discover what had happened.

Therefore, she aided in covering up the murder by removing the body from the house and laying Lucy in Walford Common.

The truth was revealed to the Beale clan when Jane confessed in a fully live instalment, which served as the culmination to the soap’s 30th anniversary.

EastEnders: Who Killed Lucy? airs tonight, July 28 at 7:30pm on BBC One.
