Man faces court charged with injuring missing woman Maryam Hamka

The boyfriend of a Melbourne woman who has been missing for almost three weeks has faced court charged with injuring her last year and in the days before her disappearance.

Maryam Hamka was last seen leaving Woolworths in Albert Street, Brunswick, at 5.30pm on April 10 and her family holds grave fears for her safety. The 36-year-old has not used her social media accounts, phone or bank accounts since then.

Her on-and-off boyfriend, Toby Loughnane, was arrested earlier this month and charged with injuring Ms Hamka in December and in April. On Friday he faced Melbourne Magistrates Court on a video link from custody.

The 45-year-old is not charged in relation to Ms Hamka’s disappearance but his lawyer, Sam Norton, said there was “an ongoing homicide investigation in relation to Mr Loughnane” that was close to being finished.

“The indication is that the investigation is ongoing and it’s nearing a conclusion,” Mr Norton said.

Police have been contacted for comment.

Mr Loughnane faces charges including intentionally causing injury, but the magistrate refused to release the specific details of the charges.

Mr Loughnane on Friday made no application for bail and was remanded in custody to face court again on June 4.

Ms Hamka is about 165 centimetres tall with a thin build, long black hair, brown eyes and an olive complexion.

Police have appealed to anyone with information regarding her whereabouts to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or
